Summer Guide for the Dental Tourist

Between May and September Budapest usually has lovely warm weather, July and August being the hottest of the year. Temperatures can reach 35-40 oC in July and August sometimes with lots of beautiful sunshine. Some people get scared from the heat in the city, but there is plenty of reasons to visit this time of the year.

Summer Guide for the Dental Tourist

TOP10 things to do in Budapest - Summer 2015

1. Baths and outdoor pools, beaches. Spend a day lounging by one of the outdoor pools and waterparks in the city. Budapest is known for it’s thermal springs feeding the city’s famous baths, but there are also plenty of outdoor pools to enjoy. In fact baths like Gellért and Széchenyi have great outdoor pools. Other popular places to take a splash at are the Palatinus water park on Margaret Island and the beach area of Aquaworld which has several slides too. Prices vary between £7-£13 / 10-16 for a daily ticket. (Aquaworld Resort;  Paltinus Bath)
2. Summer Festivals. Summer time is festival time all over Europe, it is no different in Hungary. Everybody can find the one for their taste, outdoor summer events, concerts, street fairs and festivals are always popular in Budapest. From classical concerts at the Vajdahunyad Castle Summer Festival and rock concerts at the Sziget Festival (10-17 August 2015) to open-air performances on Margaret Island, there is something for everyone. For those interested in cultural events, the Night of Museums or the Jewish Summer Festival offer a number of interesting programs.
3. Grand prix. The Hungarian Grand Prix takes place in Mogyoród, a town 25 minutes outside of Budapest. The Hungaroring is an awkward and narrow circuit. Loved by the drivers for the challenge, its delightful setting, old-school layout and fantastic carnival atmosphere are particularly relished by the fans. This year it is going to be on 24-26 July.
4. A trip to the Buda hills. If you feel like leaving the hustle and bustle of Budapest, the Buda Hills offer a variety of outdoor activities from hiking at Normafa to riding the Libegő and the Children's railways.

5. Parks of BudapestIf the sun is out, there is nothing better than relaxing with a book or taking a picnic in the greenery that makes Budapest so pleasant in the summer. City Park with its playgrounds, amusement park and Zoo is a favorite with children. Margaret Island is popular for its green space in the middle of the Danube with pools, bike rental and an open-air theater. Kopaszi-gát is a favorite park to picnic. It also offers lots of outdoor activities from biking to ball games many playgrounds and a sandy beach.
6. Dinners/drinks in the evening outdoorsSummer is the perfect time to eat and drink outdoors and fortunately there are plenty of ways to enjoy open-air dining in Budapest. Many restaurants and cafés offer some form of outdoor space. It’s a great way to experience Hungarian gastronomy with a side of people watching. (Tripadvisor Top List - Budapest Restaurants)

7. Open air bars. Nightlife in Budapest is even more fun in the summer. You can dance the night away under the stars in one of the many outdoor bars and summer-only pubs. Look for places with ‘kert’ (garden) and ‘udvar’ (patio) in their names, like Szimpla Kert or Gozsd udvar, and other places. Check out one of the roof top Bars to watch the sunset over the city like Corvintető, 360 Bar.
8. Danube evening cruises with dinner and musicEnjoy the wonderful attractions in Budapest city lit up at night time on a Danube river cruise.  These cruises offer dinner and drinks, often accompanied with a show as well. Picture the fairy tale riverfront panorama of Budapest: the UNESCO World Heritage site (BudaCastle, Hungarian Parliament, Matthias Church, Fisherman’s Bastion), floating by Gellert Hill, Gellert Spa, Gresham Palace, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, historical bridges and churches, 19th century universities and contemporary buildings. A real treat.
9. Budapest Eye. For the best night-time panorama be sure to take a ride on Budapest Eye. The big wheel came from Plymouth, UK. Standing 65 meters tall, the wheel with its 42 cars is Europe's largest mobile Ferris wheel. It has a capacity of 332 people and at night it will light up the evening sky with over 10,000 colored lights.

10. Caves of Buda. When you had enough of the heat and want to cool down a little bit, you can go to Buda and discover the chilly caves, like Pálvölgyi Stalactite Cave or Szemlő-hegyi Cave. They are one of the most valuable natural treasures of Budapest. It contains several spacious passages. It offers a variety of spectacular forms, and is richly ornamented with mineral precipitations. Visitors can tour about the hiking route of about 250 meters on comfortable concrete sidewalks and stairs, The clear, dust-free air of the cave makes the treatment of patients suffering from asthma and respiratory diseases possible. Prices vary between £2-£5 / €3-8.

Introducing the bridge-denture

Save On Dental Care - SODC Dental Clinic is dedicated to patient dental education. We hope this blog helps you in your research for dental treatment.

Introducing the bridge-denture

What is this treatment?
Bridge-denture is the nickname of the treatment where a denture is fixed with small hidden retainers on a porcelain bridge (or crowns). This dental prosthesis can replace a group of missing teeth. It is also called semi-precision attachment bridge or denture.

Common use:
A bridge denture is designed to replace missing teeth where no other fixed tooth replacement is possible. This is common when a patient suffers from severe bone loss and/or too few teeth remain for a common dental bridge. This is a very popular dental treatment due to the fact that it both replaces missing teeth and improves the overall aesthetics of all teeth at the same time.

Case study:
This patient suffered from periodontal disease and lost most of his back teeth. A badly fitted and discolored bridge needed to be replaced top front. Since the patient lost most of his back teeth 20 years ago bone loss was severe in all rear areas. Conventional bone grafts could have helped to placed implants but the patient decided not to undergo such invasive surgery. The dentist advised about a bridge-denture as an alternative solution. The result of the treatment was a natural bright smile with strong and permanent teeth in the back that made him able to return to his old eating habits.

Details of the treatment:

What does a bridge denture look like?
The great advantage of this treatment is that the bridge and denture is prepared together therefore it matches perfectly. It also covers the front teeth with porcelain (like veneers).
The front teeth received a porcelain bridge (joined crowns) to gain support for the denture and improve the aesthetics of teeth. The rear tooth ends in a small hidden retainer. This is what the denture locks onto. It is not visible when the teeth are attached. The denture and bridge together form a line of teeth without any visible clasp or metal part ordinary dentures have.

The denture is a lean, small piece of acrylic denture that locks on the back side of the front bridge. It can be removed from the mouth for cleaning with a special movement to unlock it from the teeth.

The denture has a thin inner metal lining to make it durable and strong. It is not visible and not noticeable to the tongue.

The denture includes a cosmetic gum contour to replace bone and soft tissue, which provides facial support and helps to regain a youthful appearance.

What is the price of a bridge-denture?

Who is it for?
This treatment is usually suggested to those who suffered from severe bone loss and can't have implants or a bridge on it's own. It is also great choice for those  who wish to avoid surgical treatments, or consider the cost of implants too high.

Is a bridge-denture better than implants?
I don't think you can compare this treatment to implants as it is for a different type of problem. I would say that if some teeth remain in fair condition in the mouth we should try to save them and use them as anchors. Even the best implants can never be any better than natural teeth. I would never suggest to extract teeth an place implants for a fixed denture when you can have a bridge denture. This gives the same result without the extra cost, risks and time of a surgery.

Is it better than a common denture?
Yes. The most common complaint about the common dentures is that it moves constantly which makes it hard to eat with or speak with. This denture locks on the front teeth and keeps still. It will not sit on your gums which means it doesn't have that denture feeling at all.

Things you already know in Budapest

Save On Dental Care - SODC Dental Clinic
We asked past patients to tell about their stay in Budapest to help you prepare for your trip.

Things you already know in Budapest

Past patients tell about shopping, travel and foods in Hungary (part1)

Did you find the same brands like home?
Donna (50) Kent: Yes, there is TESCO, and Aldi, Lidl and also SPAR. There is DM which is like Boots. There is M&S clothes but not food. Near the clinic there is a shopping center called Westend, where you can find everything you need. Most shops are open longer, and some are open 24/7 which is very convenient. See more tips for travel>

Is food different?
Geoff (50) London: As I noticed Hungarians eat a lot of pastry. There are these small window shops where you can buy both sweet and savory cakes. There are many old style coffee houses with Austrian and Hungarian cakes and sweets.

There is a huge market called Lehel very close to the clinic. I recommend you visit it at least once. Hungarians have many pickled vegetables, and dairy products that are somehow different to what we have home. We tried some raw milk which was the best I ever had. There are many kebab and gyros places, but not so many Indian restaurants. See more Hungarian foods>

How to get around in the city?

Jan (70) Dusseldorf: For the appointments the clinic arranged pickup but we discovered quite a bit of the city on our own. Above the age of 65 you can use public transport free of charge in Budapest, but you need to have your ID card or passport with you to verify your age. My wife bought a city pass for 3 days which was approx 15EUR. The city center is not so big, but if you want to cross the river and go up the castle you need to take a bus. See Budapest sights>
