The stages of placing a dental implant

What is the complete treatment time for a dental implant?
The treatment is done in stages, and the complete treatment time depends on how soon one stage can follow the other. This means that from a couple of days up to six month the treatment time may vary depending on the individual. The pictures below show an example of these stages:

The common stages of dental implant treatment

Removal of tooth/teeth
Most implant treatment starts with the extraction of tooth/teeth. The dentist can place the implant in the tooth socket at the time of the extraction if there is no local (or overall) medical condition to compromise the success of the implant. (In other cases or by request of the patient the dentist can leave the area to heal up before the dental implant screw is fitted. The healing takes at least 3 month in this case)

Placement of the implant screw
The surgery to place a dental implant screw takes no longer than 15 min. In majority of cases this stage is followed by a healing time. The gum surface is stitched closed above the implant for protection before exposed to everyday bacteria and pressure. (In certain cases this healing time is skipped to place the abutment and crown immediately.)

Healing time - Osseointegration
It takes up to 3-6 month for the screw to fully bond with the jawbone and the gum to settle around the implant. During the healing time bone cells grow around the implant. This process is called osseointegration.
Abutment and final porcelain tooth
The abutment is a post that fits in the implant screw but sticks out of the gum like a stump. To finish the treatment the abutment receives a permanent crown. This covering is made of white porcelain to make the implant tooth look identical to other teeth. This stage of the treatment can be completed in a week. (In certain cases especially for front teeth, some extra time is required for gum shaping before the crown is fitted.)
Is there temporary teeth included in the treatment?
Yes, in case the permanent teeth are fitted with a delay temporary teeth are done at the time of tooth removal. Long term temporary teeth may last up to 3-4 month.

How long does the treatment take in most cases?
At SODC Clinic the general treatment routine is two stages. The first stage is completed within 3 days and the second is 5 days. Between the stages 3-4 month healing time is beneficial. This treatment routine is designed for dental tourists in order to minimize the risk of implant failure.
